Friends of the Groveland Library

At least those dogs in the Paws-to-Read program do. The nationally implemented Paws-to-Read program has been developed to improve the literacy skills of children with the help of trained therapy dogs, who are registered reading companions. This intriguing program works this way: a child (ages 6 - 12) is paired up with a dog who listens - uncritically and happily - to a child read. Outcomes have been impressively positive with nation-wide studies indicating that children involved in the program improve their reading skills, enjoy reading more, make more frequent trips to the library to check out books, and also show increased respect and kindness in their interaction with animals. Sounds like an brilliant idea, doesn't it? |
