Southern Tuolumne County Historical Society
Groveland Yosemite Gateway Museum
The Southern Tuolumne County Historical Society (STCHS) is a volunteer community organization dedicated to the preservation and celebration of the colorful history of the area “south of the Tuolumne River.” Groveland and Big Oak Flat were 1850s Gold Rush towns which later thrived as a gateway to Yosemite National Park. The centerpiece of STCHS is the Groveland Yosemite Gateway Museum in Groveland welcoming visitors from all over the world, and all year long. STCHS also advances its goals by building preservation projects, community education, and the History Resource Center.
On Saturday, May 17, STCHS held its 19th annual Wine Tasting Cruise on Pine Mountain Lake. 150+ Groveland residents and visitors enjoyed a fabulous day being driven in a boat from one Lakeside location to another (6 in total!) to enjoy fine local wines and appetizers. It's a unique experience and a local tradition. Our genuine appreciation to everyone who gave their time or donated their boat or home to support the Museum. And to those who came out to enjoy the occasion. Thank you!
On Friday, June 6, at the Resilience Center, STCHS sponsored its most recent presentation from its regular speakers program: John Cockle, an "citizen historian" from PML, spoke to a record audience of 102 on the fascinating tale of the Hetch Hetchy Railroad in Groveland. With a combination of maps and vintage photos, John reviewed the story of the railroad that passed right through Groveland on its way to the Hetch Hetchy dam site in the construction era of the 1910s to 1940s. Interesting photos related images of the old railroad to locations in PML, Big Creek, and Groveland Main Street. Everyone learned a lot from this fascinating glimpse into an important part of local history.
STCHS once again has made a mark in its community outreach. In 2024 the Groveland Community Service District (GCSD) asked STCHS to develop new history signage as part of a grant to improve Mary Laveroni Park. Partnering with GCSD, STCHS helped prepare a number of new signs depicting Groveland's history, including Mi-Wok and Hetch Hetchy, as well as a summary of Groveland's rich heritage (pictured). The new signs were just installed, so come by the Park and check them out (and notice the STCHS logo recognizing STCHS's key role.)
On April 9 STCHS hosted a visit by students from Groveland's Tenaya Elementary School. Roughly 100 kids from grades T - K, 2, 3, and 6 - accompanied by teachers and parents - were welcomed to the Museum by our Kathy Brown (in period dress). Brief sessions were provided in both the Museum and Library. Afterward they visited the Book Nook and offered a free book to take home. It was another example of STCHS's efforts at community education and outreach.
On Monday, Feb. 24, STCHS held its annual "Volunteer Appreciation Day" to recognize and honor all the wonderful STCHS volunteers who give their time and energy to STCHS and its community mission. From the many dedicated docents who welcome visitors to the Museum to those who help out at the annual Wine Cruise or Family BBQ or those who attend and promote STCHS's outreach programs. Spearheaded by Board members Kathy Brown and Lindsey Lorant, the event took place at the Museum with snacks upstairs, then a delightful lunch of 5 different soups (and 3 sinful but delicious cakes!)
Many sincere thanks to all who do so much for STCHS!
